To check whether a bull is suitable for your chosen cows a mating projection between the bull and an individual cow can be done under the Pedigree Search tab on the Home Page. The Breeding Compatibility check will give the COI (Coefficients of Inbreeding) of the calf resulting from that mating. Usually a breeder would be looking for a low COI in the calf as this shows that the parents do not share too many ancestors and the calf has a spread of genetics. However, there are times when a high COI is acceptable, for example when line-breeding. If you are in doubt or would like advice please email semen@schbs.co.uk When looking at the bull photos, take note of the age of the bull. Shetland bulls can still be growing at seven years old so keep in mind that the younger bulls in the semen bank have not reached maturity, though sexual maturity is achieved early.
All of the bulls are either still alive, or were until recently, so information about them is readily available. Please email the semen store if interested in knowing more about them.
